How I Met My Son
Rosalind’s book about adoption is published by Blink
How I Met My Son is a story about my journey to find a family and how, after eight years, I finally adopted my son. It explores the sadness of infertility, the rigours of IVF, the minefield of social services, the difficulties of choosing a child (and being chosen), the happiness and shock of finally bringing that child home and what it means to be a parent of a child who isn’t, biologically, your own.
But this is more than just a memoir. It also reflects the reality of adoption in the UK, encompassing the experiences of the many adopters and adoptees I interviewed for the book, along with experts and professionals working in the field.

Advance praise for How I Met My Son
‘Whether you have no children, have been through IVF, fostered, adopted or borne biological children, this stunning warts-and-all account of the yearning to parent is a must-read. Powell's experiences, told with such particular and often heart-rending hilarity, speak to the universal questions we all ask of our parents, partners, friends and ultimately of ourselves.’
Cate Blanchett
‘Honest, funny, and, crucially, helpful to anyone who has ever had difficulty conceiving or considered adoption, this is required reading.’
Emma Thompson
‘Not only those who adopt or foster will want to read this book: the emotions of all concerned are beautifully handled in Ros Powell's touching and gripping account of adopting a small stranger who becomes her son. Thought-provoking, entertaining and informative; love and determination spring out of every page.’
Joanna Lumley
‘This is an honest account of dealing with the hurtful reality of infertility and the difficult, often tortuous process of adoption. But despite the frustrations, it's a story of immense optimism in which Gabriel, the little boy who is now the author's son, is the star.’
Sir Martin Narey, Government Adviser on Adoption
‘I wish this book had been around when I was first looking at adoption. A real chink of light in those dim days of searching to become a mother.’
Lisa Faulkner
